二、Brief Introduction

Sociology of Sichuan University is the second batch of sociology master's degree in social science after the resumption of sociology,enrolling graduate students from 1985 and formally receiving the master's degree in sociology in 1990. Sociology of Sichuan University has already developed more than 20 sessions of students. Sociology tradition of Sichuan University can be traced back to the era of the “Huaxi Ba” in early twentieth Century, When appearing Zhang Shiwen, Li Anzhai and a large number of famous sociologists. Sociology of Sichuan University continues the tradition of field investigation and formed own characteristics in the aspects of religious sociology, social psychology, west sociology, rural sociology, urban anthropology. One faculty serve as a member of Sociology Discipline Teaching Guidance Committee and a number of domestic famous sociologists work as part-time professors. There are a number of teachers undertaking teaching and training work, such as Professor Chen Changwen, Professor Wang Zhuo, Associate Professor He Mingjie, Associate Professor Chen Jin, Dr. Tang Xiaorong, Dr. Zheng Li. At present, there are more than 40 graduate students. After graduation some students engaged in teaching and research work of Social Science in the higher learning institutions, and other students engaged in specific practice in government agencies, social organizations, modern enterprises and policy research institutions. Sociology of Sichuan University took on a number of national Social Science Foundation projects and the philosophy and social science planning project of Sichuan Province, such as “A longitudinal survey of Social Development in the Minority Areas of Western Sichuan (50 years 50 households tracking)”,” Religious Psychology and Social Emotion Research in the Western Minority Areas”,” Research on the Development of Social Undertakings in the Western Minority Areas”,” The Social Construction Overall Planning of Urban and Rural Areas”, "The Social Structure of Tibetan Buddhism and Its Developing Trend". These projects provided a broad space and practice opportunity for the graduate students, which made the social science graduate students strengthen the theoretical attainment and method training. In addition, Sociology of Sichuan University has a long-term cooperation with the West China School of public health to carry out medical sociology teaching and research.

The Institute of Population Research, Sichuan University, was established in November 1979.It was one of the first ten of China’s key universities which received financial supports from the United Nations Population Fund. At the same year, IPRSCU was awarded by the Ministry of Education as a sub-center located in southwest China with teaching and researching functions on Population Science. In July 2012, the Institute of Population Research transferred to the Faculty of Social Development and Western China Development Studies of Sichuan University. The specialization of Demography is one of the first of China’s postgraduate program designated by the State Council Academic Degree Commission, and awarded as one of Sichuan provincial key discipline in 2008.The Institute has exhibited great strength in research. Currently the Institute has 15 faculty members, includes 6 professors(Luorongzhandui, Chenyong, Yang Minghong, Lijin, Wei Renzhong and Dujiang), 5 associate professors(Zuoqi, Huang Yunsong, Yonten Nyima, Li Xiaomei and Nanying) ,special professors as Sunyong, Andreas Gruschke and Ingo Breuer, lecturers as Dr.Tenger and Dr.Wang Linmei, whose academic backgrounds included demography, economics, statistics, sociology, geography, ethnology, history and so on. At present, the Institute includes a wide range of research orientations. These includes Human resources development, Computer and population information management, Population、environment and the sustainable development, Population and regional development, Sociology of population and Frontier population study, At the same time, the researchers depends on their own specialties to do a lot of studies combined different forms and disciplines, especially they did many multi-disciplinary cooperation study. The Institute attaches great importance to research, according to incomplete statistics, our professors have obtaining grants for more than 40 projects from foundations in and out of China. The Institute has published a large number of influential academic publications which includes 40 monographs, 100 journal articles and more than 20 research reports, obtained the Ministry of education of Humanities and Social Sciences outstanding achievements of philosophy and social sciences of Sichuan Province outstanding achievements in scientific research more than 10 awards. The Institute has undertaken the training of talents in different levels of the United Nations. It plays an important role in implementing the basic state policy which hope to controlChina’s population growth, improveChina’s population quality and accelerate the construction of socialist modernizations.
